Where crooked pages come from
- Sheet-fed scanners. Feed a page in the wrong way and the whole batch lands at 90°.
- Phone scans. Photographing a document in landscape and converting to PDF preserves the tilt rather than correcting it.
- Wide spreadsheets and drawings. Exported landscape but stored portrait, so they arrive rotated.
- Mixed bundles. A merged file where one source document was oriented differently from the rest.
- Fax and old archives. Legacy documents that were digitised quickly and never checked.
- Double-sided scans. The reverse side captured upside down relative to the front.

A note on skew
Rotation works in quarter turns: 90°, 180° and 270°. It fixes a page that is lying on its side. It cannot straighten a page that is tilted by a few degrees because the paper sat crooked on the scanner glass — that is skew, and correcting it requires re-scanning or a deskew tool that redraws the image.
If a page reads correctly but sits in a landscape frame with wide margins, rotation will not reshape it either. That is a page-size issue rather than an orientation one.
